Ahead of International Women's Day, Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips MP read the names of the women who were killed by men over the past 12 months, for the first time as a front bench Minister.
This was a historic, impactful, and emotional moment for so many of us, and comes a day after the Femicide Census published their important report, 2000 Women which analyses the cases of the 2000 women killed by a man over the last 15 years.
As we remember all the women who have died, at Respect we also think about the perpetrators – many of whom have been released from prison and are back out in the community – and we ask is enough being done to make sure they cannot harm any woman or girl again? And is enough being done to prevent other men from killing women in the future?
We are glad that the government has put halving violence against women and girls as a priority and know that this needs a keen focus on stopping perpetrators. We stand ready to work with the government over the next 10 years in the hope that one year there will be no names on this awful list.
